just curious about the TRUE top speed of this bike. i am 99% sure my speedo reading is several percent higher than the true speed of what i am traveling at. whenever i am on the freeway, i'll be doing 80mph at 5k rpm, and i'll have cars going about the same speed as me. most cars here are doing around 75mph, which is what i feel like the bike is actually traveling at.

so...my question is, when your speedo says you did 149, i'd be willing to bet it's really not 149. it's probably along the lines of 135 or something close to that.

the reason i bring this up is because my friend has a buell and he keeps bragging that he can do 140 all day long. i'm confident his bike isn't really doing 140, more like 125-130.

does any of this seem correct? :-D

Yes, the stock 1050 speedo is showing around 7% more than the actual speed. The odometer is pretty close to true miles in stock form.

No idea about the Buell, but I would imagine it to be the same.

Actually, it depends on how fast you are going... Mine is about 1-3mph off until about 85... Then it gets off about 3-5mph at about 90-120... Verified with GPS... Never has it been off by more than 5mph...
Definately not 7% though... I'm sure they vary a bit...

The feeling of speed is greater as there is nothing but your body deflecting wind...

Another quick way to check you speedo error is to find one of those RADAR Display units on the side of the road that flash your speed, Try it at different speeds, ex. on a 65 mph zone try it at 60mph, 65mph and then at 70mph, it should give you a pretty good idea how accurate your speedo is.

There was an article recently that all the man'frs are 10% optimistic and BMW was more like 13%. I find it hard to believe, though, that the S3 would do only 135 or 140. (150- 7to10%)
Probably Motorcycle Consumer News, a black and white no-adv.

and then try a pass at 120!!! :lgh: Yeah, it's a known fact that most all speedo's have errors. But no matter, if my speedo says 149, that's how fast I'm telling everyone I was going! I wished my 99 R1 had a top speed memory, I did alot of top speed runs with that bike(stupid in hindsight!), and finally hit 190mph!!! Sixth gear taching a little over 12k rpm, didn't hit the revlimiter, but it was right at it, because it kicked in right around 12,500.
