Only austenitic steel is non-magnetic. All the rest are magnetic. For example hardened stainless knives are martensitic and they are magnetic. Stainless brake discs are ferritic and also magnetic.

Started a bit of a chemistry lesson by the looks!! I was pretty sure, but took the pipework in for polishing. The guy who owned the place said he doubted it was stainless as it looked coated. I said I thought it was and suggested he try a magnet, he said that some coated metals were not magnetic so this wouldn't help. He is polishing it anyway....
The stainless steel I work with isn't magnetic. Elevator doors, cabines, front facings and the plates of the pushbuttons. This is pretty anoying 'cause the out of service signs are...... Luckely god invented Duck-tape, that sticks on stainless :wink:
