Good afternoon, all.
I've come up with a bit of a problem.
Today I rode back from a short trip to play some basketball. It's about 93F here in St. Paul today, so it's pretty hot. The temp gauge while doing my inner-city riding was just above the low mark, since I'd been keeping moving. By the time I parked the bike, the temp needle was about par for the course - about half way up the temp gauge. I park it and shut it down, and the fan starts making this godawful clunking/whining noise. I, of course, worry about this, as I didn't hear the rush of air, and knew the fan wasn't actually turning.
So once the thing finally cooled down enough for me, I pull the radiator away and remove the fan. The fan is melted! Not the blades of the fan themselves, but the inner part of the fan that attaches to the metal fan motor plate! It apparently melted, then the whirring fan motor "smudged" the middle of the fan up! Ick. What a mess.
So my question to those whom may know:
I'm shopping a replacement fan, and found an aluminum Muzzy unit. They list parts for the following:
-1997-2001 Triumph Daytona
-1999-2002 Triumph Speed triple
-1999-2002 Triumph Sprint
All three fans are listed as the same part number.
None of these is specifically a part for my bike - a '97 Speed Triple.
Is it safe to assume that the seemingly universal Triumph part will also fit my bike? Does anyone have any experience with the aluminum Muzzy unit?
Thanks for the help!

That Muzzy one sounds good. how Much? I have a friend who's fan went, and he found a replacement at Baxter Cycle, in Marne, Iowa for much cheaper than buying new. Baxter is a M/C salvage yard/dealer

Including 2-day shipping to me, the Muzzy fan would be about $55. Seems like quite a bit, but now I've got it in my head that I actually have to worry about fans melting! The fan itself is $36. I'm impatient, so I think I'd order it with some fast shipping...

Repeater, I can't help with the part number, but I can with prevention of it happening again.
I've had one go one me, then I blew the fuse another time. Both after riding on unsealed roads. The tar and small gravelly bits get kicked up and make their way into the cowling that holds the fan on the radiator, thereby preventing the blades from turning. The first time the fuse didn't blow, but the blades melted off the fan motor. The second time the fuse blew saving and fan damage.
Took off the fan unit and all this gravel and tar fell out. So I made a small cut-out in the bottom of the cowling to prevent stuff from building up in there again.
Good luck,
Mick

That's a good tip, Miker! I will do that for a preemptive strike!

Nice tip, Mick! I'll have to try that out while I've got the whole works apart and I'm awaiting my new fan.
I've ordered the fan from Muzzy's. I'll let you all know, just for the record, if it fits properly or if I need to modify it to work. I have a feeling, though, that it will probably work just fine.

Just to close this down :
The Muzzy aluminum fan off their site does NOT fit the '97/'98 Speed Triple. It really only does fit the models listed. I gave it a shot, but the bolt holes are too far apart, and the fan's diameter is too wide. So, off to find another source for a T509 cooling fan!
If anyone happens to need an aluminum fan for T595/955i Daytona or a '99 to '02 Speed Triple, let me know! I'll let go of a nice fan for cheap!
