Hey all,

Did a little searching, but couldn't answer this question to my satisfaction. Just got the new S3 home yesterday and put 150 miles on her today. I'm contemplating changing the oil at 150 miles with some dyno oil (not synthetic) to get the gunk and metal shavings out. Then I'll change the oil again at the regular 600 mile point with synthetic.

What to you guys think? Good or bad idea? I didn't want to change the oil if there was some "magic" break in oil that I should leave in there!

I don't know that the regular break-in oil is "magic," but it is of a specific weight, and I don't happen to know what that is. If you want to change it at 150 miles, there's no harm in that, but I'd try to use the same oil that's in it now (available at your Triumph dealer).

By the way, the first service is 500 miles.

Triumph puts synthetic in the crankcase at the factory. Run it the 500 miles and let the filter do its job. At 500 miles, change the oil and filter using either Triumphs oil or a good synthetic, such as Amsoil. There is no reason to put a non-synthetic in the crankcase. What is your purpose? Let the rings seat without trying hasten the process. :hammer:

I suppose you guys are right. I guess I was just thinking about the motoman write up where he was suggesting changing the break in oil early to get the crud out. I'm already up to 250 as of today, so I suppose I'll just wait and change it at 500.

If you skip the 'motoman' grind-it-up theory, you won't have to worry so much about the stuff in the oil...

Very valid point! BTW I'm following the factory break in!

I changed my oil at 130 miles, and put the triumph break in oil back in and run it too 500 miles, changed it again and put the break in oil again, and then at 1200 miles I changed it out and went to full synthetic oil.....

I might have run mine a little harder than most during the break in period, so thats why i change it more often
