I drained and flushed my radiator and engine block yesterday. Drained via the block screw and the hose next to the water pump. I'm convinced that it was empty.

I pre-mixed 2.8L of 50:50 Prestone 5/150 & water. As I began to fill I found that I could only get about 1/2 of it into the radiator. I left the cap off, ran it, massaged hoses, let it cool down. I then capped it off and let it get it up fan temperature. Let it cool again.

There is still no more room for the additional 1+L of coolant mix that I have left. Can someone suggest what I'm doing wrong? I drove it down the highway and the temps hung out at around 178f which seem pretty reasonable (but it was a cool night).

Should I worry about this? It -seems- full but it took no where near the amount of specified coolant. :???:

did you follow a service manual? when i changed my '00 coolant system i followed directions to a T, and stuck a garden hose into the radiator to flush all the old coolant out. then after refilling, inbtwn running heat cycles the pockets of air bubbles hiding in the system are worked out, but the directions also tell you to shake the bike left to right to make sure. hope this helps.

Yeah I've got the shop manual. I've rocked the heck out of the bike, massaged the hoses, checked for water coming out of the block (drain plug) and it is, radiator is full. I guess it must be full, just doesn't seem like I got the entire 2.8L in there... ...or even got close.

Trapped air, in spite of runs?

Save remaining coolant you have. Ride & monitor coolant level @ radiator cap every so often, adding remainder if possible.

Of course, keep eye on op temp.

Btw, tho not mentioned, my coolant reservoir has always managed staying bone dry, no matter how I try keeping full. It has never overheated, staying surprisingly cool even through Death Valley, Ca.
