I recently bought a speed triple and was told to put 1 gallon, 4 quarts of 15w 50 fully synthetic oil in my bike. I did so with a little bit of lucas fully sythetic oil stablizer it ran fine for a day the next night I turned off my bike it sounded like water was boiling in the engine but the temp gauge said everything was fine, I am about to break down in tears! any suggestions? hmmm... don't know man. But I do know that the 1050 motor doesn't hold 4 quarts! I can't say about yours, but I doubt it does either. Especially with an additive? Don't know if it has anything to do with what you heard, but sounds like you overfilled it to me. Good luck, hope you get it figured out without much problems!

speedtripleride,

Welcome to the forum.

My first suggestion is to get yourself a manual so you don't have to rely on someone else telling you possible misinformation.

I have a 2002, so I don't know if there is a difference. I sure someone else will chime in. However, the 2002 needs 3.2 liiters (wet fill including oil filter), which equates to 3.38 quarts. So you may have overfilled if the 2001 is the same capacity.

Your synthetic 15W/50 should be okay, however, Triumph also warns against adding any additives to the oil.

Suggestion: Drain what you got, call a dealer to check the correct oil capcity for the 2001, and forget the stabalizer when you refill... (and buy a manual)

I have a 2001 Speed Triple, there is a sight glass on the lower right side of the motor for checking oil level. I use an entire bottle of Mobil 1 4t racing oil as recommended by Triumph and purchased at the Triumph dealer. It's a 4 Liter bottle. I was skeptical about just pouring in the whole bottle, but with a new filter it comes out to the perfect oil level.

So speedtripleride, you put in about 1/4 of a quart too much. I don't know if this had any impact. But I'd just redo the oil change with the correct amount and skip the additives.

I dont think that this has anything to do with how much or what oil you put in!! even if you overfill, the extra oil will get purged through the airbox-- shouldnt affect the way the bike runs. how does it run after you heard that boiling noise?? if your temp guage is in the normal range I wouldnt worry about it and keep riding. I'm not sure what the noise might be.

If speedtripleride put in 4 quarts plus a little stabilizer and vclune says it takes 4 liters then it is just slightly underfilled depending on how much stabilizer was added.

4 liters = 4.23 US quarts

Just look at the sight glass and see where you stand. Plus or minus 8 OZ is not going to make or break anything but the anal compulsives among us (myself included) will want to get it just right.

If you are using the proper oil to begin with (and why would you use anything else?) DO NOT ADD ANY ADDITIVES!!! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING??? How could you believe anything from a company with LUCAS in their name? I know they have nothing to do with the Prince of Darkness so why did they pick that name?

My dealer overfilled my bike by a quart, no damage done.

I would like to thankyou all for your replies and have located the problem. Drained the additive mixed oil and put in fresh mobile one 15w 50 fully synthetic. The problem lies in the coolant, I just need to buy a manual to figure out how to flush the coolant and what type of coolant to get.

I have an '01, and if I use the whole 4 liters, it's overfull. I add 3.6 us qts. with a new filter and the level is near the top of the sight glass marks.

dude, be careful what coolant you put in. mixing the wrong coolants is B-A-D. definitely do a flush and fill, but i'd try to stick with the same "type" if possible. my research suggests there will always be remnants left over even after a flush and fill. and when you flush, be sure to use distilled water. do some homework. color was originally used to help distinguish different types but apparently even that doesn't even hold true. read about the fluid contents.

the following link is just "one" of many articles i read before flushing and filling mine last year. i don't even recall if this one had all the details, just one i happened to save.

Coolant Info

good luck.
