My husband has always hankered after an S3 but bought a Daytona because it seemed a bit more of a pratical touring machine without going the whole hog and getting a Sprint.
With a possible Daytona write off due to ferry company dropping the bike he now faces the decision all over again. So give us your thoughts.

If you're talking touring duties, I feel the S3 is a better touring bike than the Daytona. Especially if your touring is mostly back roads. You'll just get more wind blast with the S3, but it's worth it!!! :-D Sucks about your husbands Daytona though, wish him well on that! Tell him ol' CB said go for the new S3, he won't be disappointed(especially if he gets scorched yellow)!!! :-D
Dang it Tracker, you must have beaten me by mili-seconds! Don't pay him any attention, he's losing his mind in his older age!

I love my S3, but unless he wants to wear a backpack, carrying anything more than spare change is impossible. The way-cool high exhaust pipes make bags impractical, and one of the biggest headscratchers is why Triumph didn't include any decent place to latch a bungee cord or two.
And if "touring" includes carrying you as a passenger, forget it (well, unless your legs are, like, 11 inches long - which is the approximate distance from the passenger pegs to the seat).
Don't see how the Daytona is much better, though.
The 2004 and earlier S3s might make better touring rigs - dunno. I bought my '06 for one-up, single-day scootin', and for that it's perfect. If I'm goin' any great distance or need to tote anything, I'm on the Beemer.

As R100 said, touring on the S3 is definitely for one person at a time. Since there's no one using the back seat anyway, he can use it as a platform for a tail pack. Mine holds enough for about five days riding.

By the way, I had a T595 Daytona for almost three years and 40,000 miles. I think the S3 is a better tourer in that the gain in comfort from its riding position more than offsets the loss in comfort from its windblast. I think both bikes have the same passenger and luggage carrying limitations.

I'll have to disagree with r100 pilot. With the peg situation you can reverse the rear footpeg mounts and pegs which drops them down quite a bit and makes it more comfortable for passenger and a lot more stable in the corners as it drops the weight down.As with the luggage side of things Ventura make a excellent luggage system which can be used as a 1 or 2 bag system and if that's not enough there is lots of tank bags available for fibreglass tanks.Try OXFORD or BAGS CONNECTION quick engage system.I actually converted my old DRI-RIDER magnetic tank bag with a bit of inginuity and the local upholsterer.

If you pack light, you can do a week's worth of touring with only a tank bag.

I can do a for day weekend using a tankbag and tail pack on my 02 S3, but if your hubby really wants to tour, has he considered a Sprint?
