i will never be a good mechanic...

i was attempting to fix my loose eagle mach 7 pipe a couple hours ago so i took the pipe off. i noticed the metal gasket inside the pipe where the muffler slides into was sticking out about 3mm. this was causing the muffler to have a slight amount of play and would jiggle around. i tried to take the gasket out with some needle nose pliers. long story short, i tore that thing up. now i need to buy a new one.

is it even called a gasket? its the soft metal cylinder thingy with the wire mesh type stuff. exhaust gasket i suppose? i can take a picture of it if someone can tell me what it is called. i hope the triumph shop has them in stock. i have to be able to ride my bike tomorrow...

i am such a screw up. :hammer:

Don't think of it as a srew-up, more like learning in a painful way. It happens to most of us at some time or another.

That sucks. I've done similar things to many toys throughout the years. Most recently I had to remove the swingarm bolt from my fourtrax 250R and it didn't want to come out so I hit it with a hammer to get it to move. Worked great until I realized that I mushroomed the thread end just enough to make it so the nut won't go back on. Can't tell by looking at it, but it is. So anyway, it's an $80 bolt. That's a tough one to swallow. Long story short, I agree that it's a lesson, not stupidity! Sucks to be in the cage though. Now you know not to bang out a swingarm bolt with a hammer and I know not to pull out an exhaust gasket with needle nose pliers. We're both smarter now. Thanks! :-D

Don't let a little thing like that sideline your bike! Just get a little muffler tape at the automotive store and use it at the junction of the pipes until the right part arrives at your Triumph dealer.

You can buy brass or plastic washers at any autoparts store for <$1.

i bought some muffler tape at NAPA. i had to let it sit in this gooey stuff for 5 minutes. then i wrapped it around the pipe on the muffler. it was really hard to get it to stick. i hope this works...
