i live in dallas, texas if that helps. i am thinking 15w50 because of the texas heat. i am going to buy redline synthetic, have always used it in all of my bikes and have never had anything but good luck with it. on their website, they say 15w50 is preferred for racetrack engines that see occasional street use. from what it sounds like, they are saying 10w40 would be the preffered oil to use in my S3.

i am not sure which one i should buy...?

I think my 1050 runs & changes gear a bit smoother with 15W50 Mobil 4T than with the 10W40 Valvoline Synpower I had in there before.

The manual says 10W40 or 15W50, so just try them both out and decide for yourself which you like better.

I've been using Mobil 1 MX4T 10W040W in Honolulu's heavy traffic with occasional bursts to 100mph on the freeway when nobody's looking. My engine stays at 6 bars on the temp gage and shifting is smooth. I'm always interested in what people use in a hot climate like Hawaii's, so let's hear about it.

Here in humid , HOT, Alabama I use the V-Twin Mobil 1 20w-50 in both my Triumphs and it does just fine! I am thinking of looking at synthetics by Bel-Ray or Golden Spectro because this Mobil stuff is EXPENSIVE here and hard to find sometimes. I would not go below 10w-50 regardless of the oil brand for this climate. My former boss who is a Porsche air cooled turbo owner and incredible Porsche mechanic with his own shop for 35 years uses nothing but 20w-50 Kendall Turbo Racing oil winter and summer in his cars and most of his customers'cars and he swears by it for the cars he rebuilds and sevices. We have torn down a lot of these engines and I can tell you the Kendall oil does make a difference in performance and longevity. We dynoed some racing engines (BMW and Porsche) and found that no other oil we used made more HP than the Kendall. This is not a Kendall ad as I use Mobil 1 and he does also where Porsche requires it or the owner wants it in his car. Just some interesting life experience to pass along-synthetic oil may not always be the best for certain cars or bikes but I will use it in all my new vehicles for the forseeable future.

I would not use a heavy (15-50) oil for street, it is really not needed. The modern synthetic oils do no brake down like the old dino oils, which is why the viscosity was increased. Also the heavier oil is requiring more engine power to move it and takes longer on a cold start to reach all the critical locations. Just use a good synthetic 10-40 and you should be fine. I ride some in winter and the start up is sooo much easier with a 10-40 oil.
