earlier today, i was riding home from work pacing along with a considerable amount of traffic. next thing i know, i hear a "toot toot" coming from behind me. i didn't think much of it at first, but a couple seconds later, i noticed in my third-eye mirror that i got a guy on a sportbike at my 7 o'clock position. i slow down slightly and let him pass. it's a gsxr1000. he looks back at me and gives me a friendly nod. cool. young guy just like me. i continue to fall back very slowly from him. next thing i know, he drops a gear and wacks the throttle, doing a 2-3 second wheelie. i'm guessing he was not thinking about the cars up ahead at the red light. he dropped the front end down pretty rough and it looked squirrely for a moment. he almost went into the other lane where some cars were sitting waiting for the light to turn green.
i don't understand why people have to act like this, ESPECIALLY at 5'o'clock freaking rush hour traffic. whats the deal?! :hammer: it makes us look bad, honestly. not all of us act like that. i just don't get it...

I'm reminded of a line from a favorite song of mine by The Refreshments: "Everybody knows, the world is full of stupid people. . ."

You're not alone tekmoe - get used to it now that you're riding a Speed Triple.
This usually happens to me once a month on the highway - Squid going Mach 2 slows down enough to check out my bike, either gives me a thumbs up or the finger, whacks the throttle, and blasts straight ahead on one wheel into heavy traffic.
You were smart to let him pass - I usually slow down and move into the next lane to distance myself from such idiocy. Cagers are quick to judge you as guilty by association thinking that you're riding buddies with that douche and will cut you off, flick you off, or call the cops on their cell; reporting you and not him since you're going slow enough for them to get a description & license #. (It's happened to me).

"Squidly is as Squidly does, is what my momma always used to say....But seriously 1 friend of mine went to do his 1st trackday this past weekend and another also went to a thing the organizers called "Try the Track" where an instructor leads you around the track for like 5 laps while the "Full Track Day" participants are having lunch.
Seems some hotshot with a Brand-new gixxer 1000 managed to completly wad it up halfway around the 1st lap!
the 2 guys are Mhanson and Vitabrew from this site and Mike -Mhanson not only took his Thuxton but was passing 600cc sport bikes effortlessly on the straights! Proving it's not the machine it's the man who makes the difference.
Unfortunetly there is no IQ nor Maturity test performed when selling a motorcycle.
We (as sportbikers) have to put up with everyone (non-bikers)thinking/saying "Your one of !!??" them...
Nothing we do or say is going to change anyones mind so if the topic comes up just try to steer the conversation elsewhere.

Hey guys, you can't give everyone a bad name just for riding a wheelie. There's a time to pull them, and then there are times not to. This fine example of a squid that Tekmoe has described, pulled one at the wrong time. Luckily for him, nothing happened. Sorry you've already had to deal with that Tekmoe, and you've only had your bike a couple of weeks now. That guy gives all sportbikers a bad name. But even more so, as some of you have shown, it gives us guys that enjoy things like that even worse of a bad name. Don't worry with it Tekmoe, I'm sure you'll see it some more. Just realize for yourself when the right times are to "act a fool!" :-D

one thing i have noticed is more agressiveness with other drivers around me. tonight, for the second time, a cager has raced up next to me and cut right in front of with me without even bothering to use a turn signal. what kind of bs is this? i rarely EVER had that happen when i rode my sportster. i've only owned my s3 for barely 2 weeks now and it's already happened twice. i'm not putting around and i'm not portraying a rocket either; just going normal speeds with the rest of traffic flow.
is this typical for everyone riding a sportbike?

Coolest wheelie I've seen was on a Gixxer.
This past Daytona Bike Week, me and a co-worker are heading back to the mainland from Daytona Beach(A1-A). As we pull up to the light a guy on a GSXR1000 pulls alongside. At the greeen, he looks around for the cops and then stands on the seat and pulls it up on one wheel. He rode the entire Port Orange bridge from end to end. Must have been a great view from up there when he got to the apex of the bridge.

Coming from the tuned gixxer thou, I did love the bike for bits, nice to clutch it up on 100mph and sit with 3rd gear as long as my hands could take it. However with now 2,5weeks on S3, people on jap bikes are giving thumbs up all the time but also provoking to race, wheelie, etc..
S3 is a proper Hooligan bike (just look at it!!) and you have to live with its reputation, in good and bad..
Only negative side on my new S3 is that I have slow down to 40mph on 2nd to be able to clutch it up and sit with 2nd.. no more 100mph wheelies then.. , oh well at least I have better chance to keep my licence and "stay alive"..

Hey man, the S3 will come up at a much higher speed than 40. I've clutched mine up many times at 60-65 mph in 2nd. I prefer doing it at a lower speed, but it can be done. I'll bet ya Corners or Tonup can pick it up at 100mph, but they are good at standups, I am not. Most people that are good at standups, can bounce the bike up without even using the clutch. I'm sure the S3 could be persuaded to lift the front wheel at 100mph, it just may take a bit more persuasion than your Gixxer1000 did. I know my 02 R1 would also clutch up at a higher speed than my S3 does. But I do have to admit, the S3 feels more stable on one wheel than my R1 did!!! If I can just hold that freak'n balance point!!!
:-D
