As of a week or two ago I noticed that my high beam indicator stays on after start up (even though the lights aren't on). Once I give it gas the light goes out.

Thoughts?

jDub, I'm not sure about your model, but I had a similar problem with my '99. The previous owner had put higher wattage H4 lamps in the headlights, which caused the wiring and lamp sockets to get overheated and melt, thereby causing a kind of a short. It meant that the high beam was constantly on.

Your problem COULD be related to a similar thing, but in the early stages of development. You may want to check the wiring around the headlight area and look for any unusual signs.

Sorry I can't help on the removal of your panels, they're different to mine.

Cheers mate,
Mick

Check the head lights, I had the same problem, one of the bulbs had a dodge earth terminal, once it had warmed up the earth made contact. You should see one of the lights doesn't light up when you start the bike and only comes on after giving it a tap or running for a short while :???:

will check it. if this is the case, how do i fix? i'm not electrically inclined enough to be able to do so without more feedback.

thanks for the tip!

oh, further note, the indicator is not as bright as it would actually be if i had the high beams on. not sure if you saw this same behavior on yours?

Hey jdub, the headlight wiring is pretty simple. There will be only 3 wires in in each bucket for each lamp. High, low and earth. It's easy enough to take the lenses and lamps out, from there you just need to inspect all the wires, looking for melted plastic casings, and rubbing. Also check around the steering neck where the wires come out from under the tank.

Have you got that manual yet? You may need to see a picture or wiring diagram to figure out which is which wire.

If the high beam indicator lamp is only partially lit, it could mean only a partial dual connection between high and low beams. Difficult to diagnose in print.

On other thing it could be is something to do with the indicator light itself in the dash, but it's so different to mine I wouldn't know were to start.

good luck

Mick

BigandDaft, how did you fix your problem? mine seems the same.

as miker mentioned as a possibility, one of my headlights is only partially lit. i used to give it gas and it would light up and the high beem indicator light would go out. on sunday i took it apart and looked at both the wiring inside the light and the wiring that extends to under the tank. the wiring, as far as i can tell looks fine. i unplugged and replugged things but it didn't make a difference. later in the day the high beem indicator stopped coming on. then a bit later again it came back on permanently. it will not go out now. giving gas or shaking the headlight does nothing.

any further thoughts or input?
