I just came across a salvaged 06 S3 that hasn't even passed its break in period. From what I can tell the only serious damage is to the front end and it appears that the forks will have to be replaced. I'm wondering if anyone has some idea of the price for new forks or if there are any others that should fit in its place? I was also curious to see what sort of damage anyone else might notice. Here is a picture, although the quality is pretty bad.
Edit: I meant to say 06, but accidentally put 03.

thats not an '03 in that pic.
it's an '05 or above.

i would start checking if previous gen. S3's are compatible. if the steering heads of the frame are the same w/ earlier models [99-04], i dont see why not?

The odd part is that if the bike was insured (it was new in California so most likely yes) then the insurance company would salvage it only if it cost more than 75% of it is value to fix. So figure about $7000 worth of damage. Of course that includes the mechanic time which is probably $125+/hr. I figure there must be some frame damage.

If there is some frame damage (expensive!) then you could just sell the bike for parts and probably make some decent change. Either way it seems like a win win....

I'll bet the head stock/frame is bent or something... What they want for it?

I agree, if it's cheap enough part it out. Although parting out anything is a pain in the A$$... Been there done that... But you could potentially do ok on the deal. I'd be interested in a few things.

Also, it seems most motorcycles in a significant head-on get totalled for some reason. I guess the companies don't want to A. risk it, B. fork over the cash to fix...

What sucks is that some bonehead did that to such a great ride... Oh well... :???:

I've seen several bikes get salvage titles were mere scratches on the frame and no actual damage, so I'm hoping this turns out to be one of those. I won't find out if there is any frame damage until I buy it basically, so it's more or less a gamble. If the price is right, I'll end up buying it one way or another to part it out like guys suggested. But if there happens to be no frame damage, I would imagine the forks will be the most expensive item which will need replacement. Does anybody have some idea of how much new forks from Triumph will cost?

Most likely you'll have to buy the setup in 'pieces'. I doubt they sell the entire fork, triple tree, lowers etc., as a unit. I would guess 1500+. The thing to do is find a triple tree and do some Ohlins lowers...

This would be my guess also. Would be pretty hard to get the forks & clamps to bend that way without the headstock bending with them.

Lol, it takes quite a bit of force to bend a headstock. The forks are a lot longer and weaker and tend to take most, if not all, of the force in a hit like that. I know a guy who totally destroyed his F4i like 8 times and rebuilt it. The only thing original on it is the frame. SO, replacing those forks will probably be easily in excess of $1000.

As long as you don't also have to replace a bunch of other stuff, I'd go for it if the price is right. Just get an entire GSXR1000 front end from ebay from a company with lots of good feedback and you'll be golden. Most GSXR1000 (01-06 USD forks) front ends are under $1000 on ebay and are generally in excellent condition.
