Does anyone have any insight or experience setting up a FM radio with a speaker in the helmet? Thanks.

Just make sure you try to put the headphones on before you put on your helmet. Otherwise the ear speakers don't stay on very well.

Check out J&M audio. They have handlebar and belt mounted audio systems, and various helmet speaker systems.

No radio advice per say, but I mounted a radar dectector on my YZF and wired it to a mono headphone jack. I then got a single earpice from radio shack and stuffed it into the 'ear padding' of my helmet. The earpiece stayed in the helmet and i plugged/un-plugged it into the jack when I mounted/dismounted the bike. It was quite effective, considtering it wasnt in my ear.

so i guess it comes down to whether or not you want to drown out the sweet sounding triple with surround sound in your lid (illegal in some states... i think).

I haven't set up FM (absolutely NOTHING on the FM dial worth listening to in the NYC area, IMO), but I have been using a variety of mp3 players - my current favorite is a flash memory stick player, 1 GB, which gives me about 6 hours of music at a pretty fair bitrate. I have been using the middle line Shure earbuds - model is E3C - but they make both cheaper and more expensive ones. Some people prefer the Etymotic research units in the same price range, and if you're not a nut case about audio, there are cheaper (or more expensive) units - check eBay. I find that the earphones give decent ambient noise reduction, so they've replaced my earplugs for most riding. IF you don't blast the phones, you can still hear traffic, so you're not totally cut off from the world, but it's probably illegal in some areas. My particular mp3 player also has FM, and will run about 15-20 hours on a single AAA cell, so "installation" is pretty simple (pop it in your pocket!) The earphones fit is perfect under my open face helmet, and once you've picked the right set of cushions for YOUR ear, they're quite comfortable. Although, if you do some research, you'll find that some people just can't seem to find a comfortable fit. Good luck, keep us posted on your final solution!

Do a search in this forum and the modifications and workshop forum on StarCom1. It will allow various audio input sources and also supports rider to pillion and bike to bike communications. I've posted info on my install. You can also check out the StarCom1 website.

I wanted a StarCom, but can't afford one. I bought a Walkman (there are cheaper ones, but they don't get as good reception), then I bought the flat speakers that go inside the hemlet. They sit in the recess for your ear, and have velcro to keep them in place. Then, I velcro'ed the walkman to the side of my helmet. The controls are easy to use, has memory presets and digital tuning.

It's not high-tech, but it cost about $20.00 and it works.

I did what dWaRf did, but not for FM or MP3, for a cheap intercom.

I can't use the bud earphones, so I found a cheap set of thin pad style earphones, cut them off the head band, soldered the wires to the intercom set up and velcroed the pads in the helmet.

Would work just as well for the FM.

I don't use the intercom much, no noise cancelling and Gabi doesn't like it much.

My wife doesn't like the wind noise either, so we quit the intercom in favor of ESP. She always knows what I'm thinking anyways. The one way communication really sucks though.
