So, I brought my new '06 S3 home Friday night. I just managed to get home before the rain started. And of course, its been like a monsoon ever since, so I didn't get a chance to ride on the wekend. Yeah, I know the bike doesn't really exist until I post a photo here...-)

But I was trying to attach my tank bag straps yesterday. The front strap goes under the front tank mount. I tried to remove the front allen screw so I could raise the front of the tank. The allen screw was very tight, and I managed to turn it a couple of turns, but it feels cross-threaded. Is there a trick to getting this off ? Should it just unscrew ? Or is it safety wired or somehow clamped in place ?

thanks,

Rich

I've taken the tank off of my '05 S3 a few times and there's nothing special about that screw in the front. It just screws out.

You do have to be careful about the other connections to the gas tank once you get that screw and the one in the back off. (if you're actually taking the tank off). There's a gas line connection and another tube connected to the tank of some sort.

If the 1050 is anything like the 955, you should have two breathers on the left side of the tank where it meets the frame, fuel in and out, fuel pump power cable, and your fuel level sensor cable on the bottom. If your bike is running strange after reconnecting the two breathers and/or your get a sucking noise every time you open your fuel tank after riding, you probably have them backwards.

Your front screw might be getting pushed on by the tank while you're unscrewing it. Make sure the tank is centered and isn't pushing on it. Otherwise, check the threads when you get it out to make sure the dealership or someone assembling the bike didn't cross-thread it. Underseat mount is easy.

Good point. I'd add that undoing the back and side panel tank mounting screws, then slightly lifting/wiggling the tank from the rear might help release any tank-induced tension on the front screw.
