I picked up my '03 speed trip used last Spring.
It had a new bridgestone BT 010 on the rear and a fairly worn BT 010 up front.
Now, I have a rear tire with 1500 miles on it and a spent tire up front.
Replace one, or both?

Replace both and get some Michelin Pilot Powers. A much better tire

First of all getting rid of the BT 010 on my 02 S3 was the biggest handling improvement I made to my bike.

Replace both, Pirelli Diablo, Metzeler M3, or Micheli Pilot Power, also keep an eye on your air pressure. I ran 32f/35r psi on my Diablos on my 02 S3, and I run 34f/37r psi on my super awesome Michelin Pilot Powers on my 05 S3.

Here is a link to Michelins for $209 a set plus shipping.

Michelin's Pilot Power for your S3

After tires, having a properly dialed in suspension makes a huge difference. Diablo Corsas work beautifully on the street, just don't do the 190. 180s work so much better on the 03.

Good point kuhlka!

The 180 makes the bike quicker and more nimble around corners!

I've got Pilot Powers on now but I've got to say BT 010's have been my favourites for a few years, on a variety of different bikes. Wet or dry and even on a track, they have never let me down.

I think that often the confidence you have in a particular brand or model can make more of a difference than the tyre itself. They should all be pretty good these days.

excellent - so we're in agreement on the 180?

Ton Up - don't know if you're interested but Lester tells me the Metzler truck is going to be at Frank's during the BMW national in July and they'll be doing two for the price of a rear. Not sure I can wait 'till July because I really need a front now. But perhaps that'll be good timing for you...

I'll probably try out the Michelins.

Thanks!

I run Metzler on the old BMW.

So far, really liking the M3's. Feel more predicatble than the pilot's and more stable overall. Compliance is a bit better too. Really happy with the purchase, 300 miles on them so far. There is also a cool little elephant to try to erase instead of the Michelin man... :-D
