Anyone ever use that fiberglass tape some people use to insulate their exhausts? As it gets warmer around here, my right heel is getting cooked from proximity to the pipes. I figure some of that heat tape would probably do the trick as well as looking pretty badass.

Any downsides? I imagine it might trap water, but it would get boiled off every time I run the bike, right?

My buddy with an XB12 wraps black header tape around his headers and exhaust and says nothing bad has ever happened. Its just a PITA to have to rewrap when he does exhaust work.

I'd probably only do the stuff aft of the header back to the cans and leave a small gap for the O2 sensor. The only time I'd see myself having to bust that apart is if I decided to go for a full system.

On a technical note, how does he secure it? I don't imagine that there's any adhesive on it. Do you just pull it tight, tie it off, and hope for the best?

Some stainless wire leftover from your racing days, twisted with the seldom used tool, is how I've seen it finished. I've never used the wrap, personally. Is it put on wet like the exhaust repair tape I used on rusty Cleveland cars in high school?

Pretty sure he puts it on dry and wraps it really tightly. I'd have to check to see if he uses wire or hose clamps.

if you put the tape on wet its alot easier(dry it puts off alot of fiberglass type dust).i know that on carb. bikes you sometimes have to rejet after taping, i know i had to.and because the pipes retain so much heat the life of your pipe is often shortened.
