I'm just curious what happens when you 05/06 triple guys turn your key to "on".

I get nothing untill the kill switch is on. Which is weird to me. According to the manual the instruments should light up. Every other bike I've ridin has been, turn key "lights", flip kill switch "hear fuel pump", fire it up.

Oh yeah, and my low fuel light won't go off!

Don't know about the fuel light... but you really should not be using your kill switch at all. I've never used mine (on purpose) and it states in the manual to NOT use it to shut down the bike in any but an emergency situation. There have been several threads about the use of the "kill" switch. I would get out of that habit, if you do indeed use it to shut down the bike...

Hi Beatpusher
Geoff3 is right about the kill switch; the manual says not to be used unless in an emergency. My 79 RD400 manual says that too. Its a good idea to leave it alone especially on our bikes as it seems it can cause bother with the ECU.

Its funny that when I took my bike to the dealer and said it wasnt starting up right, the first thing the guy did was rock the kill switch a couple of times with the key on.

BTW my killswitch also keeps the dash from turning on.

The kill switch, ignition key and alarm (or blanking plug) are wired in series on the same exact wire.

So using the kill switch will not confuse the ECU any more than using the ignition key or an alarm. The result is just that the one wire is cut at a different point. The ECU has no idea which point you are using to starve it's power supply.

You will have to have all cutoff points "ON", in order to get any juice flowing to the gauges, fuel pump relay or ignition relay.

Refuel :wink:

Maybe the sensor is stuck or there is a break in a wire. But have you're dealer take a look, it's warranty!!

Good stuff! Glad to know this. I have been using the kill switch and this thread initally had me concerned. Glad to hear a technical solid answer from Martin_R.

Thanks!

Are you sure thats right Martin? My 03's lights come on and the dash lights up, but stays blank when I've got the kill switch off and the ignition on... Maybe the 1050s are different though.

I am certainly no electrician, but as far as I can see from the shop manual the lights, oil pressure warning, main beam warning light etc. are on a completely separate circuit that does not go through the kill switch, but does go via the ignition key only.

So using the key will allow this separate "lighting circuit" to power up, but the other circuit "starting and charging circuit" gets its wake up power via
-> ignition key
___-> kill switch
______-> alarm (or plug)
_________-> gauges
_________-> fuel pump
____________-> ECU

Of course there is plenty of other stuff, but that is the basic route. Seems that if the fuel pump would be cut off electricity, the ECU would not power up either.
