I have read the owners manual and I didn't see mention of a fuel filter. Is there one on the bike? (I would think fuel injection it would.) And is there a replacement schedule for it?

If the new model is similar to the old model, the fuel filter is inside the tank on the inlet to the fuel pump. Since the pump is inside the tank on the old models, you have to remove the tank and then remove the pump asembly to replace the fuel filter. According to my service manual for my 2001, you should change the fuel filter every 12000 miles.

Has anyone replaced the fuel filter themselves? I got about 13k on my '06, and manual says I need to replace the fuel filter. Is this really necessary - does it normally get dirty to the point in needs to be replaced? Dealer said it cost about $30.

I take it the job is relatively straight forward and easy to do. I've removed the tank before, but never any of the components on it though.

Thanks

It's not hard. If you still have the plastic fuel fittings, be VERY careful when disconnecting them as they tend to break. Getting the plate off is easy--just remove the screws. You'll want to replace the gasket & the screen. Once the mounting screws are off the plate, you have to kind of rotate the whole assembly a little because it's a tight fit but it'll come out & the rest of the job is easy. Would also be a good idea to replace the o-rings on the male fuel connectors.

The actual filter is made by Mahle/Knecht and the filter factory part number is KL 145.

Search for KL 145 with the below parts finder for full cross reference. Tens of Ducatis, Cagivas and Beemers use the exact same part with different part #.
http://217.89.113.25/mahle/start.jsp?sprache=en_GB

Few numbers for the exact same item, just with different brand stamp on the side:
BMW 13321461265
BMW 16142325859
DUCATI 0241441800
DUCATI 42440041A
DUCATI 42540041A
DUCATI 42540041B
TRIUMPH 1240850

If you have an auto parts shop close by that sells Mahle/Knecht, they might have the filter with the Knecht branding also.

Depends on the quality of fuel you have been running through the filter. Probably it is OK, if you live in a country which has reasonably modern refineries and the local gas station's tanks are not full of rust & ****.

Put empty tank on the table upside down, undo pump plate bolts, wiggle whole pump assembly out from opening, replace filter, reassemble. Very easy. Just pay attention to the correct torque and even tightening pattern on reassembly - the torque was very small.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback. I guess I might as well get around to doing this, or at least inspecting the filter, when I change my plugs out pretty soon

I'll be sure to pick up a gasket to go along too
