The fuel filter is a solid can of aluminium. Can one inspect such a thing without cracking it open?

I'll be sure to pick up a gasket to go along too

Probably a good idea. The service manual recommends to replace pump mounting plate rubber gasket every time you remove plate. I have, however, successfully reused the same gasket at least 4 times. It's just a sturdy large rubber O-ring.
But it's your ass in the cooker if the plate leaks, so: your bike, your call.
Edit. One more tip: the old filter is probably under fuel pressure when you remove the hoses. Best use a rag or you'll get fuel all over your face.
