sounds louder then I remember on any of the other bikes I've owned, only at highway speeds. bike has 20 miles on it. is that just because of the new gearbox? tell me it gets quieter?

Check your chain slack! It could be your chain is way too tight and needs to be loosened a bit. This is the ONLY time I get a whine from the drivetrain.

Had a similar experience after taking my S3 in for maintenance. On the way home after picking it up, I could hear "gear whine"..especilly when slowing down to stop. Checked the slack at home and there wasn't any. I added some slack per the manual and the "gear whine" was gone.
I'm sure by now that you have it sorted out, but that was my experience.

actually, checked the slack and it was within spec. went for a few more rides and got more familiar with the noise-- seems like its there around 3k-3.5k rpm, only on the gas, seems like in top gear only. hmm, will mention it to dealer. let me guess, he'll probably say "they all do that"

Try loosening the slack just a bit, keeping in mind when you sit on the bike the slack changes since you've just stretched the chain by sitting on the bike. It might be that you have hardly any slack while riding, but when you hop off its within spec. This is how it is for my 210lb ass.

He might, but to paraphrase Nixon on one of the famous Watergate tapes: "he would be wrong."

hey Salty, i was going to post a thread about this very subject. I have been experiencing what i originally thought was some kind of wind noise around the 3-3.5k rpm. I soon realised it was engine/gearbox related once i pulled in the clutch and it stops. I have only just noticed it in the last few weeks and if had my bike since October 2005. Would be interested to know what you find out. I'll try with my local dealer and see what he has to say.

Does it only seem to do it around 3-3.5k rpm, when you have the clutch lever out, and at speeds 45mph or lower?...
Chain needs more slack.

chain slack at 40mm as per manual while unloaded on the sidestand. I guess I can try taking it out more and see what happens. I'll let you know

Just try it. If you lived nearby, I'd bet you cash that its the problem. My bike was whining like an SOB down in Florida during Bike Week because I didn't have enough slack. Checked the slack off the bike and it seemed like I had plenty, but when I sat on it, I had maybe 1/8 in.
If you've got an extra set of hands, have someone else check the slack while you're sitting on the bike. This may not be the problem, but I'll be it is... If so, its a lot cheaper and quicker to fix than an actual transmission problem.
