Just come back from a 600 mile day out blasting around France / Belgium - 3 countries in one day, how cool is that :-D

Noticed a small drop of oil on the floor near the sidestand each time I stopped, on closer inspection it looks as though it is coming from the Neutral light switch (single wire just above and to the left of the gear lever output shaft) I cant get anything in to try and tighten it as a- it's in a recess and needs a thin box spanner b- it has a spade connecter on it preventing the use of a socket.

Has anyone else had this ?

If I manage to find something to fit (any idea what size it is?) how much oil am I going to lose if I remove it to apply some thread seal compound?

Thanks in advance

Is it around the kickstand?? If so had the same problem with my "03" and the dealer warrantied the main drive seal behind the front sprocket which was the culprit. I hope it helps your issue?

The 1050 might be different but I had a leak near the switch you are talking about. Over time, I determined that it was leaking from the sidestand bolts...that's right...the sidestand bolts. The bores go into the engine case and Triumph mechanic told me microscopic holes in said bores are the culprit.

In my case, teflon tape was the cure. Not a drop since (thousands of miles) as it should be. :-D

Keep in mind if you don't replace the washer on your drain bolt when you change the oil, you'll get a minor drip from that point. I had one for a while until my next oil change when I put a fresh washer on it.

Annealing the aluminium washer would help. Rub some soap on the washer and heat till the soap turns black. Dunk the washer in water. That should soften the washer up.

PS. The soap is just used as an indicator to indicate that the aluminium has reached the correct temp.

After very close inspection I am 99.9% certain that the leak is from the neutral switch, I removed the sprocket cover and no oil there, and it is too high to be from the sidestand bolts. Have removed the switch, wiped the whole area clean (oil around the switch is clean so no 'travel' contamination) put a smear of blue Halimer sealer on the threads and have reassembled it. Not been able to try it yet as the heavens have opened and I dont have any 'water wing armbands' to keep me afloat.

Thanks for your suggestions though, it gave me a few areas to check that I may not have.

Best way to anneal with an oxy-acetylene torch is to use a carburizing flame to the aluminum or steel to blacken it with soot, then change to a oxidizing flame to heat up the piece gradually until the soot disappears. Be very careful, because shortly after the soot disappears, aluminum can melt through or bubble at that temperature if you continue to add heat.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, go out and buy a bunch of crush washers from a Triumph dealership for like 10 cents each. Thats what I did.

Any auto parts store will sell you a fistful of washers for that price.

They are 14mm id and of the wider variety of the two that the auto places usually sell.
