When I start the bike in neutral, on releasing the clutch lever, I get a sort of rumbling 'worn ball bearing' noise. With the lever pulled the noise ceases, releasing clutch, noise reappears. Is this normal?

It is normal to get some sound as you've described, although it shouldn't be too loud. But yes, all bikes that I have owned have had some "clutch rumble" if that's what you want to call it. Sorry I'm not mechanically inclined enough to actually explain what it is, but it is normal.

I have a little bit of that on mine, but never thought much
about it. Try that on my vented, dry clutch Ducati and it
sounds like 10,000 ball bearings in a cloths dryer.

Thanks for the replies guys. The noise isn't too loud but it's noticeable.
My Kawa ZR7 doesn't make such a noise at least not that I have noticed.
Went for 1st oil change today and Triumph mechanic suggested I drop a question here on the forum as S3 05/06 aren't exactly common over here in Malta (I believe mine is the 2nd one) and thus he's not that familiar with the new S3.

That is what I miss about my old duc. You could get a lot of wierd looks with an open clutch. "Loud Clutches Save Lives"

Totally normal... A little disconcerting at first, and it will get a bit noisier when your oil is ready to change.

Its funny how many people will tell me something is wrong with my Ducati when I ride it, from the way the clutch clatters.

Mmmmmm Malta, I have had some good times there.

Mine is doing this loudly as well. Just checking again to see if it's normal.

Mine does this and has from day one. Though, it is more of a feel than an actual clattering noise. If yours is loud, I would think it's time to change oil, or have it looked at. To test, ride a wheelie for about 1/2 mile. If the engine oil light comes on, then you have your answer. :upthumb:
