I have this friend of mine who owns a 98 (not 97)Speed Triple 509 with injectors. I understand this was the the only year they did this (sorry if misinformed). Ever since he bought the bike it has run rich and badly. He has had it in the dealer a number of times, the have attempted to corredt the problem by remapping. This has just made things worse.
The bike has no airleaks, correct valave timing and adjustment, good plugs and a clean air cleaner.
I have put forward the theory (and I do this as a carb man not an injection expert by any means) that there is a faulty sensor somewhere on the bike telling the brain that the bike is running rich. The dealer has mearly tried to compensate for this by fiddling with the mixture via the mapping process. If he couyld find out what sensor it was a change it all should be well again, with the exception of maybe having a final tune up.
Has anyone else heard of this, any pointers.

The summary of the problemn is - running rich, dosen't do it all the time but does do it often, sometimes runs better when hot.

All help very gratefully recieved, and you may save hime from pulling the rest of his hair out ....

Cheers

Nic

Hi Nic,
Sounds weird, but I have a similar model and when they downloaded the TOR map it ran rich as buggeri! Put the stock map back in and it's all good. Are the plugs correct? Any other modifications? I've heard of this happening with other S3s and it's sometimes a matter of working out which map is best, not just saying, "It's the right map mate, must be some other problem"

If the dealer can't fix it, take it to another one. The diagnostic tools should tell you whether there is a faulty sensor or not. To me it sounds like the mechanic dude is a bit short on knowlege.

Yeah I think the parts guy was using the company brain each time this bike went in. So their diagnostics machine should show up a bad sensor eh? Well thats something we didn't know before. The have tried remapping it 5 times and it's gone from unrideable (how you'd have the nerve to hand it back in that state and charge for it I don't know) to no change. The only mod is the can but the bike runs worse with the std one on. As far as I know the plugs are right. They have tried replacing the inlet manifold gasket, the broke the first one and charged him for it !!!!!
I'm not sure there are too many other dealers in his area I guess we'll keep on stabbin at it. Thanks for the info though we might be able to get it to a different dealer just to hook it up on their machine and get an overview of it's running, like a second opinion.

Cheers

Nic :-g

I't's all sorted. If anyone has issues with a 509 running badly, please ask I will pass on just what he did, yep thats right he did it himself and is making a very strong complaint to Triumph about that dealer (UK Dealer). They were basicly trying to set it up using the maps from a 595......!? Ah welll he's happy and they were incompident. Life goes on.

Cheers then :-D
