Our Rat pack are off to Bernkastel Kues in Germany in the Easter break. Any tips would be cool. I have been before but it was a while ago. 1990 to be specific. I wanted to be there when the two Germany's became one. Seeing the wall come down was a bit special. I had a peice of my own but the wife binned it when the thought it was a bit of old rubble !!!

Keep it clean boys

Hey Monkey,

I've never ridden in Germany, but I did spend 3 weeks there last summer. Roads are great, although up around Hatz (sp?) near the old East/West border there are some roads closed to Motorrad on weekends. This is because there are so many crashes.

I also had a German mate, who went back for a holiday who said the roads around Garmisch Partkirken (sp?) in Bavaria, near Neushwanstein are magic, although they were so good he overcooked it and woke up in hospital with a ruptured spleen among other things.

You may need to check the areas you are going have roads open to Motorcycles on weekends.

Hopefully someone more local can answer in more detail

Mick

I'll be in Bernkastel as well on the 29th of April. Roads are very nice to drive. Look regularly in your mirrors, because the locals are mostly there to 'give you a lesson' on their twisties...

Don't ride with anything other than original exhausts, because the police will guarantee be there to stop you for DB control. And try to ride within the speed limit in the villages...

From Bernkastel you are approx 1 1/2 hour drive away from the famous Nürburgring. If you have the time, visit that place, I'm 100% positive you'll adore it !!

I'll be in the Eifel (near to the Nürburgring) this weekend, it's a very nice place to drive with many twisty roads.
In the weekends there are some road blocks now and then, the police will inspect exhausts then. With an E-testing mark(like e1-*0489*) on your exhausts there will be no problem.

Have much fun there and have a good laugh when you see the vertical German tail sections of some home made bikes. :-D

Monkey, you'll have a ball!! You really HAVE to go to the Ring, it is the best!! I used to go every year after the WSB in Assen, always had a great time. Not sure about the women Hivel (check the armpits!) and not many people speak English so that can be difficult. I've been 7 or 8 times and never with legal cans. Last time there I was on a fireblade with wolf underseat exhaust which was the loudest thing this side of motogp!! I got stopped (twice) and never mentioned the cans.... I certainly wouldn't be going back to standard especially given the no speed limits and Ring. Be careful through villages/towns. Just as a point of interest, a mate of mine got caught on camera doing 95 mph in a 40 zone. They sent him a fine through the post back in the UK which he ignored. They never followed it up.....Not that I'd condone this behaviour :hammer: Have a great trip..

I drove through Germany for work a thousand times. My 2 cents:

- NEVER pass anybody on the right side, unless you are actually bumper to bumper. Beside being forbidden is very dangerous because nobody expects it.
- The autobahn is fantastic but:
keep your distance, not the three second rule, make it a five. You should always see the whole car in front of you without being able to read the license plate. yes, that far. This way you are sure you have enough for the speed and enough to avoid being pulled over
When they post a speed limit you better observe it. Because they are not flexible especially with tourists and because if there is a speed limit it is there for a reason (they don't just throw speed limits randomly out of the truck as the do here- USA).
If somebody is approaching behind you, move to the right and let them pass. Be prepared though that some Germans do use the left lane to go at 60Mph "because I pay taxes and it is my right, and you should slow down anyay because it is dangerous."

Keep in mind that ANY modification of the vehicle you ride is illegal. You can get away with some stuff because your vehicle has a foreign license plate - outside EU - but if they know the modification - such as louder/aftermarket exhaust pipes - they might seize the bike. It can happen to a German even if he changes rear mirrors (the same goes for northern Italy guys, HD actually had some troubles because they were selling stock bikes with mirrors having the "object in the mirror are closer than they appear" which is against the law as well as the lack of switch to turn the lights off."

Even though there is sstrict regulation, they do drive drunk. Keep it in mind during weekends.

If you can, cross the alps to go to Austria and Italy, it is heaven for a speed triple.

Bon Voyage!!

Thanks for the points everybody. I've decided to leave my Art Cans on but put the baffles back in. They are within UK legal noise regs that way.
