tntriple, I just did mine for the 5th time again last night, so here's the run down, providing it's just an oil and oil filter change, it's a peice of cake.
Buy 4 litres of the recommended oil and the oil filter, your dealer will have it in stock. Oil is a touchy subject, I use Silkolene Comp 4 - 20w50, or the Mobil 1.
1) Warm up engine to normal operating temp.
2) Put bike on rear stand - if you have one, if not it's no big deal
3) Place drip tray under drain plug, remove plug being careful not to drop it in the drip tray.
4) While waiting for the oil to drain, remove the oil filter, it can be a bit tricky if you haven't got the right filter removal tool, but you can punch a screw driver into it and use that as a lever. You're going to toss it anyway.
5) Clean the filter seat on the bottom of the crank case, making sure the old O-ring seal is not stuck on
6) a) Smear some NEW engine oil on the seal of the new filter,
b) Almost fill the oil filter with new oil.
c) Screw it on, be careful not to cross thread it and make sure it seats all the way - torque is 10nm, but very hard hand tight is usually enough, that's what I do because I don't have the tool. Haven't lost a filter yet, but it needs to be very hard hand tight.
7) Clean and refit the sump drain plug, replacing the copper washer if it looks in bad shape, but on a new bike it should be fine.
8) Remove the oil filler plug, insert funnel and pour in new oil. It should take 4 litres exactly. REPLACE filler plug
9) Check the oil window that there is oil there.
10) Start bike, make sure oil light goes out, run it for a minute or so at idle, give it a couple of revs, then shut it down.
11) Check the oil window for the correct level, don't worry if it's a little over full, but with 4 litres, it shouldn't be.
12) Check the filter for leaks, retighten if necessary.
13) Check the drain plug for leaks.
14) If all is well with no leaks, no oil light, go for a ride and have fun.
This usually takes me about 20 minutes, if done in an orderly fashion.
PM me if you need more,
Mick
