I want you to try something slightly different without bouncing.

2nd gear 6k rpm as you are standing up close the throttle a bit then snap it open, yes cover the rear brake too. (50-55mph launch speed)

3rd gear same thing! (65-70mph launch speed)

4th gear 7k rpm and bounce it.

Please let me know what you think. And you are 100% right regarding the sound it is a lot easier than looking at the tach. The S3 is gut so much grunt down low that it has a very wide wheelie rpm/speed zone!

That sounds a lot like the way I was doing it a while back. The reason I do it the way I do now is you get to the balance point quicker. That saves you the revs on the engine, and longer wheelies come because of it.

Agree!

Sometimes I lean back a little farther to accomplish the same thing.

When you put on your pipe, map and air filter you will hardly have to bounce it in third. I am getting my filter this spring.

Now my question is this. The S3 has become a claimed "wheelie monster." What about the first gen. S3's? I'm not looking to become an evil kenivel or anything, but I'd like to hear how others are able to get the older 885's up.

Not that I've tried to hard (I still consider myself inexperienced and always probably will) but I can't seem to get mine up. <-sounds like a personal problem I know. The front's come up a few times shifting hard from first to second... but thats about it.

Shouldn't the 885 have enough power to muscle its way up?

For me 1st gear wheelies are just a matter of cracking the throttle open quickly but I find it pretty difficult to get the front up in 2nd.

I'm wondering what some of you fellas weigh in at. I'm 94kg which may have something to do with it. Maybe I just need to move my heavyweight ass back a bit. :-D

I am 175-185 depending on how much Ben & Jerry's I consume in the winter.

It is a lot easier to get it up standing up, regardless of weight, you are actually shifting your weight farther back.

Practice practice practice

I am 5' 11" and weigh in at 180lbs. It all comes down to practice and listen/feel what the bike is telling you. The 05/06 1050 triple WILL 1st, 2nd, and 3rd power wheelie, and they don't have to be stand ups either( but they are easier).

I have gotten sit down POWER wheelies in the first 3 gears, and stand ups in the first 4 gears. Granted 4th wasn't much, but its there. 1st gear sit down any speed, second gear sit downs around 40 to 50mph, 3rd gear sit downs around 65 to 70 mph.

Certainly. You just can't expect it to rise up because you wrapped back on the throttle. Try this in first gear and about 3500 RPM (rolling of course): Quickly shut the throttle off, and then open the throttle up full. It should come up 6 or 8 inches for a few feet and then set down gently. You can also use the "Clutch technique" to bring up the front.

This picture was shot as he was coming down. No clutch action, no on/off throttle or anything. Just launched hard. Okay, he cheated. This bike has a bigger rear sprocket by 2 teeth (48?) so it has a lower gear ratio. It's hard to keep the front end down when drag racing!
