Hi Guys,

I will getting my Triple delivered next week. Any idea how to break in this bike? I had an 04 R1 before and I did not go over 10k rpm for the first 500 km (300 miles).

Thanks!

Just follow the sticker on the tank, like I did or use a alternative way (discussed in this forum some while ago) but I didn't

I just bought mine two weeks ago and I asked my dealer the same question. Unfortunately, you get different answers no matter who you ask.

The advice I liked was ride how you would normally ride without doggin' or boggin' it down.

I followed factory guidelines... bike is perfect with no issues. The biggest issue is not to stay at any one rpm for any length of time and do NOT bog the engine at all. Do this for the first 1000-1500 miles (they go quick) and you'll be fine.

Do your own maintenance, oil etc... at the appropriate intervals. The bike will serve you well...

To get max power out of the motor you'll want to do LOTS of engine breaking for the first 500. I went through my first 500 in a week.

Basically, follow the general guidelines for the RPM limits, vary your revs, shift often, and engine brake the ***** out of the motor. Run the revs in 1st up to the limit, then let off the gas and slow down, repeat this in each gear on the backroad straights. Once you hit 500 miles, change out the oil and filter for any quality FULL SYNTHETIC 15w50 or 10w40 and flog the ***** out of your bike to your heart's delight.

If you have not picked it up yet. Call your boss and take 3 days off.
tell the dealer you Will need the 500 mi oil change the day after you
pic it up. Look at the tank sticker when you start to have fun.
By day three the front tire will only be on the ground 50%
of the time.

I followed the 'sticker on the tank' proceedure for the first 500 miles, easily done in the first day so book it in when you pick your bike up. Once the service was done just use commen sence- lots of gear changes and avoid prolonged 'fixed' rpm, plenty of engine breaking and if the motor feels under load. . . change gear.

Ohh and the most important thing. . . . make sure you carry a photo of your wife / girlfriend - cos you wont be seeing much of them

I followed the sticker for the first 600 miles, then it was red line time very frequently. I hit the rev limiter a few times. I have ober 3,600 miles on it last summer.

Break it in the way you ride it. Try to change speed and RPM very very frequently.

Many thanks for all your advice! Good to see that there is such a big community of S3 owners.

I think that I will just break in this baby like I have done with all my other bikes. However, this is the first time that I have bought a roadster. All my other bikes have been racers (GSX-R's, R1's,...). Last year I have only been doing trackdays but unfortunately the Miss did not like all the money being pumped into New Tires, Oil, Crashes and many other cash eating excuses related to racing

I hope that I will have a lot of fun driving this Triple through the twisties! I will certainly keep you guys posted!
