Just went to a 17 tooth sprocket. Noticed I still have an indicated 80mph at 5k in 6th gear. Then I remembered when it was on the dyno, the speedo was working. Hmmm.

So I put it on a rearstand, put it in first gear and presto, the speedo works. shift to neutral and spin the back tire, no speedo indication. So the pickup is in the tranny? No one noticed or cared about this before? So now I don't know how fast I'm going without math? Tell me I'm missing something here.

Yes, you're right, Iromoda - I believe a previous poster had mentioned that in the last revision, Triumph removed the speedo drive from the front wheel - where virtually EVERYBODY puts it - and put it into the drivetrain. Probably saved them 12 cents in manufacturing - can't think of any other reason. But now it creates a whole new potential industry, with aftermarket speedo "drives". Ain't it exciting
Only good point is that apparently the speedo wasn't particularly accurate even before...

actually, most of the japanese sportbikes have been like this for years. Nothing new, maybe to Triumph, but definately nothing new. I actually think it's way more dependable like this. Sure it's not that accurate after it's geared, but I would bet that with stock gearing, it's no farther off than they were with the front wheel speedos!

Thanks, Cheapbastard - see what happens when you don't buy a motorcycle for 24 years? They change everything! First no kickstart, now no speedometer drive from the front wheel! Maybe they figure that these bikes wheelie so well the front wheel never touches down...

I remember how my aprilia measured speed by means of a sensor that detected the bolts in the rear brake rotor as it spun. I went up 5 teeth on the rear sprocket and didnt change a thing. Loved it.

I have this one on my S3 '05 and it works well with the Triple. v3.0 if I remember correctly.

Do a search on this forum if you need the wire colors and suggestions on where to hook it up. It was discussed sometime last summer.

This all brings up an interesting topic of how accurate the stock speedometer is. Has anyone tried confirming (via gps, radar gun, etc...) how accurate the 05/06 triple speedo is at various speeds?

Sound like it might be time for a recon mission

By the way iromoda, where did you get your 17T front. I have been curious about one and they seem to be harder to find then an honest politician.

All hail the speed triple 1050

With stock gearing the speedo (with half worn tyres) at 100km/h is showing about 5.5% too much. The odometer is pretty much spot on. So the speedo error is no mistake on the factory's part, but it has been included on purpose.
