Considering the $$ for the Duc, reality of the service deal of the Duc, the S3 wins it for me. You could put all the extra $$$ into the S3 suspension and still wind up a couple grand less.

Service expense aside, I think this is a reasonable way to look at it. By upgrading the S3's suspension, one gets close to having a bike that's comparable to the S4RS. I've just ordered a Penske shock and will have my forks revalved when it arrives. However, when it comes time to sell the bike, I don't expect to get much of the $1,100 I'm spending on suspension upgrades back in incremental sales proceeds. On the other hand, since the Ohlins on the S4RS is OEM, the buyer of the S4RS will likely get back a good portion of the "S" premium when he sells.
But that's OK, I enjoy riding the S3 more than I've enjoyed riding any Ducati. That's more important than a few dollars here or there.

You are probably right especially if you consider that I will most likely not push the Duc hard enough to really put those upgrades to good use.

I assume the action of the Ohlins suspension is controlled and compliant, based on my past experience with Ohlins. Even if you aren't pushing hard enough to go faster, you'll likely appreciate the comfort and confidence provided by high end suspension.
