Well the cheap option has worked ok. Bent the stems in a vice which has moved them lower and wider - big improvement in rear vision but still not 100 per cent - i can live with it though. They also look heaps better.
The large nut will slide off the stem before bending but once the bend is increased you will need to drill out the rivet on the base of the stem and slide the nut back on from that end.

Did you damage the stems when bending them? Like crease the paint at the bend causing it to crack.

I am just about to give it a go myself. Did you bend it cold or did you blow torch it first?

Just bent them cold -they are only mild steel -no creasing of the metal -the paint marked slightly but it's hardly noticeable -could be touched up easily. I protected the stem in the vice by wrapping it in a piece of leather, sleeved a length of pipe over the stem and they bend like without much pressure.
I thought if the bend did crease or the paint came off i would sleeve a short piece of black shrink -wrap tubing over the bend -the stuff you use on wiring harnesses but i didn't need to
I've finally tracked my camera down so i'll post acouple of pics soon.

Hey Toast why don't you show a group of us S3 riders your mirrors by joining us to the VIC/SA RAT trip to Mount Gambia. I've sent details to you private mail box. Would be good to see you there.

OK, Toast - you gave me the courage to do it. I had bought a pair of Motrox bar ends; wanted them tucked UNDER the grips. Better than stock, but still not good. Was almost ready to try the Rizomas (there's a very nice gentleman in Texas importing them - try PJsparts.com), but before I dropped a couple of hundred on those, I figured I'd give your method a try. The stock mirrors are angled about 45 degrees. I removed the mirror head and rubber boot, clamped the long end into a smooth vise, and grabbed the short end with a LARGE crescent wrench. Bent it to about 90 degrees. Didn't remove the lock nut, so nothing had to be drilled. Stem finish survived with no discernible damage. Results still aren't perfect - STILL too much elbow, not enough directly behind, but much better than stock, and they have a much lower profile, which is better IMO. Thanks for the tip, Toast - good riding!

Isn't "useless" a little strong...?

OK, I've never posted a pic before, and these are really bad, so maybe they're only slightly less than useless...
