I am considering changing the gearing on my 03 S3.
(dropping down a tooth in front)
I found much discussion on how the change will effect quickness, top end, gas mileage, etc.. but I didn't see anything about speedometer error.

Does anyone have information regarding this? Or know where the speed is taken from? I'm guessing somewhere in the transmission.

Any help would be appreciated.

It's taken from the front wheel, thus will not affect your speedo. :upthumb:

Thanks Beers.

But I don't think you're correct here.
There are no cables on my bike going to the front wheel, just brake lines.

It has an electronic speedo which leads me to believe that it gets it's data from the primary gear.

Look on the left hand side (as your sitting on the bike) of the axle. There is a cable that runs from the sensor unit up the fork leg, at least there is on my '04 which is mechanically the same.

Here's a pic where you can see both the brake line and the speedo cable...and it's a cool pic too!

Edit: I just checked the shop manual and the '03's are indeed the same.

Yep, digital speedo on the front wheel. You can do whatever you want to gearing on the 02-04 without speedo issues.

That picture looks like me on any given day :-D :-D I think my original front tire has lasted so long because it rarely touches the tarmac!

Beers,

Please except my apology for ever doubting you.
As you are well aware, you are completely correct.

Thanks again.
