How many of us have dropped a tooth in front sprocket? I have on my '03 S3, and found acceleration has increased without sacrificing a whole lotta top end. (as noted in other threads regarding this). Has anyone found a good front AND rear sprocket combo? Or is dropping a tooth in the front, pretty much the way to go?

Same here. Easier to change a rear and the chain won't end up doing sharper bends than with stock.
I have tried 43 and 44 rears on my 05 and they both fit the stock chain just fine. I think dropping a tooth on the front or going 3+teeth bigger on the back might be too much for a 1050. Too revvy for my taste at least.

I love the stock gearing. Not saying you guys are wrong for wanting to gear yours, it's just the stock gearing fits my riding style perfect! If I don't gear this bike, it will be the 1st bike I've ever owned that I haven't geared! :-D But, I usually end up going down 1 in the front. It's not that much harder to change the front imo.

I went to a 45T on the rear, and can swap between the 18 and 19T countershaft sprockets with a chain adjust. I like the 19/45 setup the best.

Lol, I've said this too many times in the past, but I'm +3 in the rear and -1 in the front for a 17/45 combo and mine accelerates like a bat outta hell. I'm probably going to switch back to the stock front sprocket though since +3 in the back does plenty on its own, and 1st gear wheelies are just plain scary with the 17/45. The front wheel wants to shoot up just way too fast, and being a wheelie nut, I'd like something a bit smoother and predictable.
Otherwise, the 17/45 combo just turns the bike into a real beastie and puts the power at every rpm after 4k rpm. You might just try it for sheets'n'giggles sometime.

Isn't 19/45 pretty much the same as the stock 18/42? Or does the stock 01 have some other factory settings?

My stock gearing is 18/43, and the 19/45 is a bit lower than that. Everyone was saying how good 18/45 is, so I tried it, but found the 19 better for the high speed riding I do.

How is 19/45 better for high speed riding? Adding one tooth up front is like dropping 3 teeth in the back isn't it? Wouldn't that make the rpm's lower at higher speeds, meaning less power when you need it to push you over 100mph?
It took me forever to get up to 140 in a full tuck with the stock gearing. Now I get up to 135 FAST with the 17/45!

I like the 19 because when I do 400 mile days or 1000 mile weekends, it's nice to have the taller gearing. Like I said, If I want to have quicker acceleration for blasting around town, I can throw on the 18T.
