I just got back from a 3 day trip on the Speed Triple. I bought this bike new in 2000, but this is the first time I've actually traveled on it. 2 days of riding with one day between visiting friends, 1240 total miles covered.

What an awesome machine.

Also, I have just put a tank bag for sale on e-bay,Item 8034655892

do you have a 2 - 1 exhaust under there?

(keep seeing a huge hole in the road and *suck* there goes the bag and my body scrapping down the hiway.)
cool set up though. looks comfy with that back-rest.

OK, I admit it. I'm jealous. You've done exactly what I planned to do last summer - only I was headed to New Orleans. I'm thinking Deadwood, South Dakota this summer. Unless of course, my planning a trip is a curse on the land, resulting in disaster. Hope not.

Your bags and bike look great!

I like how the underseat exhaust allows you to pack more stuff with the panniers. Sounds like a fun trip! I'm going to do a few long rides this year as well.

Wow, that is doing some riding in 2 days! Sure you had a day in between, but over 600 miles a day, that's getting it! I'm going on a trip to Deal's Gap in April, and I'm hoping to see what a great st the S3 is! We never just hang out around the Gap, there's many good roads all around there. I'm hoping to do around 1500 miles or so in 3 days. Glad you're enjoying it! :-D

Yea, it was a pretty good haul both days, farther than I've been in a day. I was running about 150 to 165 miles between stops/fillups.

Thanks for the compliments on the bike, it was a good time and something I've wanted to do for quite a while. Just pack up and go is the only way to make it happen.

That exhaust is actuall left exit, very high, carbon fiber(3 into 1, not 2 into 1). The bags lay over them, with some heat/muffler tape taped to the inside of the left bag. It all worked perfectly.

"(keep seeing a huge hole in the road and *suck* there goes the bag and my body scrapping down the hiway.)"
What does that mean?

I think what he's saying is he thinks the tank bag is going to shift and go under the wheel or something. I've got one, and if you attach it correctly, it isn't going anywhere.

Nice set-up BooneDog!

I've got the same Cortech luggage, having bought it when I still had my Sprint RS. Haven't mounted the saddlebags on the S3 yet, but I'll try your muffler tape heat-protection technique when I do.

Last October, a buddy and I met up near San Antonio then rode out to Big Bend NP, and for that trip I used only the tail bag and my Cortech 21 liter tank bag, which provided more than enough luggage capacity for the three day outing. Our total mileage was about the same as yours, but spread more evenly over all three days.

The Speed Triple is a better traveling bike than people might think, especially if you keep to the backroads.

It is the perfect ride for touring - comfortable, fun to ride, really just a great street bike.

Link to a trip I made out to Wyoming last Spring...

Hey Crud,

With Spring only a few weeks away you must be getting itchy for a long ride - Where are you guys planning to go this year?

I'll be looking forward to a ride report.

Cheers
