I just bought a 99 speed triple with 3100,00 miles.I live in Michigan and bought bike from a dealer in so.cal.When it was delivered it wasnt leaking anything.I started bike up and let it idle to hear it run.The next day I noticed a couple drips of oil had fallen from bottom of oil filter.I changed oil/filter and was able to ride it on dry pavement that day for a couple miles.(we are in middle of winter),Again next day a couple drips then it stopped.Anybody have this problem?,my 97 daytona never did that.I read in recall posts that the 99 had an oil leak recall for crankcase and am wondering if this could be that.I called the dealer and had them run VIN to wich they said it didnt tell them anything about such a recall...any suggestions? Thanks guys

The first thing I would check is that there isn't an old rubber sealing ring stuck up there, so that when you tighten the filter, you have 2. I had that happen and it leaked. Other than that, I don't know.

My first suggestion is to make sure you haven't over-tightened the oil filter. At the same time make sure there isn't an old O-ring stuck on there like the others mentioned.

I know a pair of brothers who are Harley freaks. One of them had an old early 1970's FLH Road Oiler. One day, in a fit of oil leak rage, he swore he'd make it so that bike never leaked again. To his credit, six months and some $6000 US dollars later that Harley did not leak oil. Not a drop.

These are the kind of guys who paint their garage floor white and there is never a tool out of place.

The night after the first test ride post rebuild, the second brother went out in the garage with a little can of oil and put three drops on the floor under the FLH.

He did this every night for two weeks.

This is the definition of evil.

The first brother was halfway into the second tear-down before the second brother told him what he'd done.

The moral of the story? A couple of drips of oil aren't worth $6000 USD.

crashmasterd,

That is so very true... but I HATE leaks, one of my few peeves. regardless of the moral of the story (as evil... and funny as it is) I would be in the same position. There is no reason a leak cant be fixed or at least isolated.
