So, I've narrowed it down to two. Replace the Mich's or replace with Metzeler Sportec M1's. The biggest dilema is cold weather response. Pilot's are decent... just wondering about the M1's. Any suggestions?

Hey Geof, I've tried lots of tires, including Sportec M1's. Once I got turned on to Pilot Powers about a year ago, I haven't looked twice at anything else! It's going to be hard for me to switch to any other tire, I love my Michelins!

Other Motorcycle: Down to one....for now
I recently finished a set of Diablo's on my '01 & really liked them. I'm running Conti Road Attacks & they're GREAT! A lot beefier than the Pirellis, so I'm hoping for longer life.

I have been running the Conti Road Attacks. The rear just wore out at slightly less than 5k miles while the front is still going strong. The Contis have a great look and seemed to stay glued to the road really well.

I used Michelin Pilot Roads on my RF900 and thought they were great also. I've never tried the Pilot Powers.

The Michelin Pilot Powers are better than the Sportecs (have not tried the Sportecs on the S3 though). In my opinion the Pilot Powers are pretty much the best durability/traction street compromise available.

If it is the ultimate traction you are after there are of course even softer tires on the market, but then you will have two problems in street use: short tire life and they only work well when they are warmed up (eg. slippery straight out of the garage).

Why change to a different brand if the OEM Michelins have served you well?

I've had 2 sets of Sportec M1's on my S3, and they stick like glue. I was going to try a set of Pilot Powers, and then I read that Metzeler has come out with the Sportec M3, which is supposed to have longer mileage And better grip. I'm going to try them out. I'll keep ypu posted.

Geof, where do you live? Do you need a quick warm up tire? or a tire you warm up and once you hit the twistie bits there glue? I ask bc of temps in your area should play a part in your decision.

As the others stated (powers) are the shiznit for wear and traction. In my opinion they grip just as well as the Diablo's but last longer.

The only tire out there thats got newer technology is the Dunlop Qualifier, and they have a striking resemblance of the powers.

For the price of the michelins ($209) they simply cant be beat.

aaron I would think twice about the pirelli's unless your getting a better deal on them then the powers.

oh and I never really liked the feel of the M-1's they felt like stone hoops in the tight stuff.... but all my references are coming from my Ducati.

I would rate them

1.Michelin Power Race, best grip, but DOT race tire needs warm up time, great for twisties but stay out of the rain.

2.Michelin Pilot Powers, great warm up street tire does it all for a great price.

3.Pirelli Diablo, great warm up and stick like glue, just dont last as long as the powers.

4.Metzeler sportec, last forever, ok for the not so twistie roads.

Then who know where the new Dunlop will fit in, but it seems that the MC mags are rating it #1

Thats my 2 cents.
