I had the same experience and opted for a sheepskin-covered gel pad. It's very comfortable, but I sit higher on the bike and take a little more wind on the torso for a nicer ride. The other problem is the gel takes on the ambient temperature. Last summer, when it was hot, the seat was uncomfortable. It also shifts when riding aggressively. Long rides on straight roads are great, but twisties make the thing a little innervating. So, in the end, it's an "on" or "off" proposition. I carry it in my trunk bag when I get serious and put it under my butt when I want comfort. The pad was relatively cheap. I bought it from American Motorcycle Specialties.
