bike starts and shuts off if i dont give throttle
i have a 03 955i speed triple.
bike was great until i let it sit for a few weeks without starting it. charged battery, and still seemed weak. checked battery, and it tested bad. bought a new battery, but when bike is cold, it takes a while to start. just turns, and turns, and eventually it will try to fire, and then the next time i try, it fires up.
i went through this for a little while, as the only down side was that people looked at me weird when i was sitting in the parking lot trying to leave work.
i parked the bike for a while, and when i got around to checking it out again, i could not get the bike to start. charged battery, and all of the gauges come on, and the headlights turn on. crank the bike, and there was no noise coming from fuel pump. tested it and all that fun stuff, ended up being bad. replaced it, and now i have fuel pressure again.
charged battery, and tried to start. and just turned over and over, no fire.
hooked bike up to my car to jump it, and starter turned faster than normal, and bike started. ran like crap, and shut off.
today i changed the spark plugs and put it all back together. charged battery, and bike started, and ran good. went on a 10 mile ride. during which, i pulled to a stop sign, and when rpms dropped, bike shut off.
started right up, and drove home with no other problems. got home, and put bike in neutral, and idled for a few seconds and shut off again. bike started up right away.
shut bike off, and went inside to grab some tools. and i thought i would share a little bit of data from my multi meter
battery voltage-
off- 12.30
key on, lights on-11.96
bike on -12.05
tps closed- 11.40
tps wot- 82.4
ign adv degrees- between 2.5-5.5 but usually at 3.5 just jumps up and down between 2.5 and 5.5
idle rpm is at 1052- 1475
even thought the rpm gauge does not move when this is happening.
all numbers were collected using a obdII scanner, and the battery voltage was with my multi meter
not sure what the idle, ign adv, or tps is supposed to be at, so if there is any numers that sound wrong, please let me know.
and im pretty sure the voltage should be higher when bike is running. so i dont think my battery is being charged properly while riding.
thanks in advance, and sorry for the long post, i just wanted to be as thourough as possible....

Are you saying that is the voltage across battery with engine running at idle?
If so. you have generating system failure - either stator or R/R (although check Fuse 2 first, and also the Stator connector plug)
See the sticky thread for further diagnostic info.

yea, that is when my bike is running.
i had checked out the sticky for it once, but ive yet to test the rest of the charging system, i didnt have enough time before work.
i just got home from lunch, and the bike has been sitting on the charger for like 3 hours now, tried to start the bike, and would not start.
just turned and turned. i could hear the fuel pump, bike would just not start. im assuming that any running problems i am having is coming from a lack of power. (charging system)
once im riding, i dont really have any problems, except when i come to a stop sometimes the bike shuts off. this too i am assuming is from the charging system.
i have searched around, and keep finding people saying that their bike with shut off while riding, and not start up. followed like 10 threads, but they all leave me hanging without a explanation as to why it happend, the thread just ends..... very frustrating....

Brian, DEcosse is definitely correct. If you measure less than 13.5V at the battery when the engine is running (my '03 955i reads 14.2-14.5V) you have a definite problem with the charging system. That alone can cause all sorts of funky things to happen. Find the cause of that, fix it, and I'm guessing your problems will go away.

yea, i figured it was not charging. i heard that the triumphs are picky about their voltage, and that they like a full charge. i was leaning towards the charging system as a cause of ALL of my problems, and you pretty much confirmed that.
i plan on the next few days to diagnose what the actuall problem is, and then do the voltage upgrade.
ill post my results when i get a chance to work on it. thanks for yalls quick response time, and helpful coments.
for the record, today was the first day i have ridden my speed triple in months.... best 10 miles in a looooonnnnnggggg time. felt good to be back on her.
any idea what it will run in the 1/4 mile?

In perfect tune with an expert in the saddle, very high 10's, low 11's; but keep in mind once you get past the 1/8th mile point a Speedie is up against an aerodynamic wall.

I don't think a stock 955 will ever see 10 anything, even with expert on board.

I tried to test the bike, bit not sure if I'm doing it wrong.
Positive lead in the 3 prong plug, negative on the 4 prong plug. check all 4. repeated with the other two prongs from the 3 prong plug.
when I do this test my multi meter does not differ from attached or disconnected.
and to test the stator wires while bike is running.... I can't get it to start. so how would I rule this out?

Did you do the resistance (isolation) test with stator?
Measure resistance from any of the three pins in the stator plug to engine ground - that should be 'open' (inifinite resistance)
Why won't it start - battery discharged?
You need to get it charged or use jumper cables to get it started to get the voltage readings off the stator.
Did you check the connector plug at the output of the stator - there are two, one up by the R/R but another from stator itself - that one is tucked up around the top right rear corner of the cam cover (behind the top engine mount there)

Battery was charged, but when I go to crank, it seems weak.
I hooked it up to my car to try to start it like I did yesterday, but it won't start today. I'm gonna try again when I go home for lunch.
The resistance test is with bike off and key off right?
