hola,

i'm going to do a road trip from SF to Orange county, then to San Diego in the spring.
can anyone refer any good roads, canyons, etc. in OC?? as well as SD?
i used to live in SD but only for 3 years and didn't have a car, so my travels were limited.

(wondering too how bad of an idea it would be to go down to mexico on the bike)

In the OC area there is Ortega Hwy, Santiago Canyon, Carbon Canyon, Azusa Mountain Road, Glendora Mountain Road Up to Big Bear the 38, 18 and 330 are all good. Have fun!

PM me. I'll take you through the Ortega's and then down to Palomar on the way to San Diego. (Palomar Mountain is East of Oceanside which is half way between Orange County and San Diego.)

I Live in South Orange County right near the beach in San Juan Capistrano which also happens to be the entrance to the Ortega's.

by the way, here is a link to some pictures of the rides we go on...

(you'll probably have to paste it cuz I suck)

Go to http://www.pashnit.com/ and click on California Motorcycle Roads. Great website! I would recomend Highway 1 down to San Luis Obisbo for sure. Then once you get past LA, you got Ortega (highway 74 between I5 and I15, take I 15 south to Temecula, head south on 79 then west on 76 to get to Palomar. Go back to 79 and hit the S2 then S22 to go to Borrego Springs, then S3 in Borrego to 78 west through Julian. From Julian, south on 79 then Sunrise Highway over Mt. Laguna takes you down to I8. From there go west to SD...

There's no sense getting on Hwy 1 until you're south of Carmel; neither the road nor the scenery is noteworthy. I'd take Hwy 25 south from Hollister. That gives you two options. First, the better way, is to cut over to King City at Bitterwater, take Carmel Valley Road north to Carmel, then take Hwy 1 south. Second, the shorter way, is to take Hwy 25 all the way to 198, take 198 west, then take Nacimiento-Fergussen (sp?) straight to the coast.
