I have a Quill fitted to my '03 and it does sound louder but it does not sound as loud as a race can, even above 4000 rpm. Yes it is street legal, but last year I rode by a group of police that were stopping bikes and checking them for such things as race cans and they didn't even watch me go by. Therefore, I can only assume that they did not even think it was loud enough to warrant a second look. As for getting rid of the flat spot, well all I can say is 'what flat spot?'. My bike has never had one. Extra perfromance, well I cannot say about the 1050 but on my 955i it is questionable if there is any noticable performance change.
What the Quill has done for my bike is given it a nice deep rumble that is not offensive, does not attract the attention of the police (I was once told by a motorbike cop that they love race pipes on bikes - it gives them a few minutes warning that someone is heading their way with an illegal exhaust on) but sadly does not have the sound of a race can. Would I buy another one? no, I would buy a race can and take the risk with the police to be honest.
