Are Heel Protectors of any use?

Do those heel protector things on most modern bikes actually do anything? I don't see how they do anything on the 2011+ Speed Triple....there is nothing behind them to be "protected" from....They look ugly and useless...I'm wondering why the manufacturers put them on....is it some sort of government required legal thing?

I agree. The stock heel protectors are ugly and don't seem to serve any purpose.

I picked up a set of Rizoma rearsets and their heel protectors are also ugly and look out of place (I took them off). I wonder if Rizoma actually expects riders not to install the heel plates given that they're not finished as well or as stylish as the rest of the kit.

Once you start riding hard you want something there to lock your foot/ankle against.

The moron that put the rearsets on my track bike left them off, i spent the first track day with my foot hitting the swingarm

I use mine all the time. Press and set up against them. If I took mine off I don't think I could ride well and it would be unstable.

I press my heals into them all the time. I bent the heal guard on my Buell from pressing against it.
