(From motorcycle daily)
"Triumph is expected to replace the somewhat aging Daytona 955i with a larger-displacement triple. Just as Triumph did in the "600 class" by developing a larger-displacement triple (the Daytona 675), expect Triumph to exceed the displacement of the 1000cc four-cylinder superbikes of its competitors when a new Daytona is announced in the next model year or two. The larger displacement allows Triumph to offer a broader spread of torque than its higher-revving competitors. "

Somehow the way this is worded its not just going to be a retuned 1050. Certainly be cheaper to just put the 1050 in there.

I'm thinking if they don't just retune the 1050S3 motor for a sportbike powerband, then they might punch out the 1050 motor to a new 1200...

1050 + an additional 50cc's per cylinder = 1200...

Odd that they'd word it that way considering the 1050 seems the obvious choice. Unless they're being deliberately vague to keep the other manufacturers in the dark.

Triumph has been telling dealers (quote) "You will never see a 1050 Daytona."

What I think this means is that they have a new motor in the works that is not based on the 955. And yes, it probably will be in the neighborhood of 1200, if not 1300 cc.

The 955-1050 series of engines is getting a little long in the tooth anyway. It's about time for a change.

Besides, the Benelli TNT is already pretty close to 1200 (1130 cc) so I would guess that true to Triumph form they will try to one-up them. Perhaps a 1250? Or, a long stroke 1550 cc triple anyone? :hammer:

I saw a post on the T595 site that had a scanned copy of an article with a spy photo of the new Daytona. Had a 1050 engine and speed triple tank with a 675 rear. No plastics on it so it looked like a speed triple.

I also read an article in a Euro mag (MCN? or TWO?) with an interview from the Triumph product manager. He basically reassured that the daytona was done. Good article.

The most recent issue of Torque also quoted Triumph as saying that the big Daytona was done and that they were going to concentrate their sportbike efforts on the 675. They also included an obituary of sorts about the significance of the larger Daytona from its T595 origin.

The MCN article was very interesting, but you have to ask, how do they know it was a 1050 engine? My guess would be 1100 to 1200ccs. There is no need for a 1000 (or thereabouts) engine as Triumph have no chance of competing against the 'throw-away after 18 months because it's way (not!) out of date' Japanese motorcycles. The Italian exotica is just that, and as such is difficult to use every day unless you are a masochist, as beautiful as they may be (and i have ridden many). I think in the future, Triumphs' biggest adversary as far as useable, good looking, affordable and well built 'I'll keep this one for the forseeable' type bike, is likely to be KTM..... (I still fancy an Aprilia Falco for a third bike though!) :hammer:
