stupidly loud muffer

The previous owner gutted it and stuck in a straight tube with some holes into the can... I can't get the tube out to modify it and quiet it down, it's slightly too large and get stuck towards the end. Is the endcap supposed to come off? The three allen head bolts just spin free, and the rivets appear to be nothing more than cosmetic.

I'm just looking for tips. The thing is just obnoxious at 8:00am and 2500 RPMs cold. I stuffed it full of steel wool and it made no difference.

problem is i can't get the insert/tube/core out, and I don't know what it looked like when it was stock. I suspect the PO removed the endcap and maybe RTVd it?

Those allen heads are not stock, original ones were chromed button head and tack welded. Are you sure it's not a period Triumoh off road? They outwardly look identical except for the very end as look into the muffler. Also just forward of the lower spring see if it carries #2200512 and "not for road use". This is the muffler I am running and it's not too loud but it hasn't been f'd with either. If it is this one you probably could cut off the allen heads with a Dremel and re-pack. If it was originaly the "quiet" one, well they have internal chambers and baffles to make them quiet and don't rely on fibre glass. So if the previous owner just some how gutted it or willy nilly just drilled through all the innards, you my friend may be screwed.

Huh, the PO did say he gutted it, but then mentioned he grew up on dirt bikes. I think I am just screwed. Better work on lowering that idle, I guess.

I'd look on Ebay for a stock one.
People often sell mufflers after getting an aftermarket one.

Why not seek one from a recycler (junk yard)

There aren't any good ones locally, do you know of any online?

And I've looked on ebay, seems they have every other triumph model except mine, plus they are asking way too much. I wish there were universal ones you could pick up at autozone for $30.
