Riding around on my '04 S3 the past few months, I notice that I've got a different headlight set up to other S3s I pass. As is normal in Australia, the lights are always on. When dipped my left headlight is on and the right is dimly light with a (sidelight) small bulb: When I switch to full-beam this is reversed with the left dimly lit and the right on bright and high. Is this normal? It doesn't tally with the manual. Are there any options?

Hey Shutter, I ride an 04 too and had the same
question - answer is yes it's normal! No you don't
have to put up with it. Peter Stevens mechanics
put in a new relay for me and it's 2 headlight for low
and 2 for high beam. you'll be wrapped how much
better you can see at night too! Only cost about
$55 fitted

The guys on t595.net have this problem as well, and have a cheaper solution, I think. You can go to the Problem solving section, and ask, and should have an answer in a day or two.

Many thanks triple-chick and Speed3. I'll follow up and hope this will brighten up the encroaching dark in the southern hemisphere.

I don't know if my experience is related, but on my S4 both headlights were on low beam and only one headlight on high. I bought a (no kidding) $6 relay from Radio Shack, installed it where there was an open socket and, voila', instant light from both on high or low beams.

I'm pretty clueless electrically - if I go to an electronics store, what exactly am I asking for?
In fact, where on the bike does the relay go?

I'm going to play around with projector lights this summer. I found out I can get Buell Firebolt projectors for $40 each, $20 each with my buddy's discount. Then all I need is the wiring and make some brackets... Think I might do a triple headlight, two Firebolt lights and a round PIAA fog lamp underneath to make a triangle shape.

I'm confused why would the bikes be set up different? Both my lights are lit on Low and both are bright on High.

Ditto for me.

Under the driver's seat on the RHS there are 4 relays. Removing the first 2 (the front two) will render the headlights like a Euro bike--one headlight on for low beam, the opposite one on for high beam. Removing the third relay will cut both lights.

Why can Europeans only handle one light on at a time? I think that oncoming traffic may be confused and think that it is a diminutive car if there are 2 headlights...just kidding.

It must be some sort of legislation.
