I am interested in reading experiences, modification's and accessories used on the S3 for long distance touring.

I'd be happy with a pointer or two to existing threads as well.

Thanks

Hey TiggerTwo,

The best long distance ride report was written by a member called Crudmop last year. He did 5000 miles in ten days. You can see the thread here Long Distance Touring

In the very last posting on that thread he posted the url for his website which has a detailed report and lots of great photos. Well worth a read.

I tour on every bike I've ever owned, and the S3 is fine for touring. I've done a few 400 mile days and I find the seat better than many I have had on other bikes. See this thread
Luggage for a discussion about carrying luggage on the S3.

Apart from the Ventura luggage system which I bolt on whenever I am going on a trip, I have not seen the need to make any modifications to make the bike better for touring, apart from adding ZRX Kawasaki mirrors to improve the view behind. Also I have not removed the whole rear fender....(just shortened it a little) as I ride in the rain regularly, and removing the rear fender exposes you to a constant shower of muddy water when the roads are wet.

While it is not in the same league as a BMW K1200LT as a tourer it is great fun when the road gets twisty.

Wow! 5k miles in 10 days, that's impressive! :upthumb: I'll be doing a little of long distance travelling this April, but I doubt it will be like that. I'm hoping to do around 2k miles on a 4 day trip. I'm sure it shouldn't be a problem, I did around 1600 last year on my R1, so 2k should be a breeze on the S3! :-D

I've done lots of 600km days (well, afternoons into late nights in the mountains actually) and aside from being godd**n cold the riding position has been fine. I'd actually like to get some lower bars in order to have a more comfortable ride... I find that I'm always leaning far foreward. Try doing a slow push-up--the closer you are to the floor (without touching) the harder it is to hold: leaning forewards with stock bars simulates lowering yourself to the floor and holding it during a push-up. Lower bars would place my arms farther away and therefore lead to a more comfortable long term riding position. Anyroad, this is my theory...

The Triumph tank bag is a must - you can get all the
stuff you want to get your hands on quickly in there,
great for the camera, phone etc

And for all the other stuff a husband (or wife i guess)
on a Blackbird to lug all your ***** around for you. Those
Birds can carry just about anything
