Does your Speed Triple burn oil ?

Mine (2006 with 52 000 kms) does, especially when I ride it hard. After a good day of riding (say 350 kms of twisties), I'll need to add about 250 ml. If I don't add oil, the transmission will be rough as heck the next day.

I was told it was pretty normal for this engine to burn oil. How about yours ?

Yup, my bike (2007 w/ 19xxx miles) def goes through some oil which is always exacerbated when I ride the bike hard. I can go through as much as 8-10 ounces per 1000 miles when ridden hard.

Crack open your airbox and see if there is any spray in there or worse yet sitting oil. I found that when I opened mine there was a lot of spray and even traces of oil on the throttle body butterfly plates. Apparantly its pretty common for these motors to "spit" some oil when ridden hard.

My answer to the problem? Run the crankcase breather line to a catch can and plug the nipple on the air box. No more oil in the air box, cleaner running motor, and a more visual way to see where a lot of the oil is going.

My '97 at 37,000 mi is down just a tick from full on the sight glass when I change it at 5,000 mi. , easy riding, hard riding, doesn't matter. My air box has zero evidence of oil.Would be interesting to know if there was a trend reguarding oil usage to break in procedure.

Mine (04 955) has always used about 800 ml every 5000km's but i recently bought a Thruxton (to slow me down on weekends) and i have been using the S3 for trips to work etc and have noticed that it is not using oil anymore so, my oil use obviously has to do with how hard i ride the bike. It has never used any more than the 800ml in 5000km's over the entire time i have owned the bike. I bought it with 12000km's on it and it now has 34000km's. I do think the oil use has to do with how the bike was run in because i remember the previous owner saying he broke it in very gently, so he probably glazed the bores ?

Not s3 but my 07 tiger 1050 with 42 thousand miles uses about 4 to 6 oz every 250 miles with my style riding which is med aggressive with lots of engine braking.

Where did you get a sight glass for your oil?

Only 8200 miles on my 2011 but it doesn't burn or use a drop.

The T509's and I'm pretty sure the 955's had a sight glass for oil level. No dipstck at all.
