I once owned a Honda 914, I vaguely remember seeing a saddlebag for it that was made with a heat resistant material that actually rested on the pipes without melting or burning. I think these bags would also work on the 05+ S3 or any bike with high pipes. Problem is I can not remember the name of the company that made them. If you know the name of this company please let me know.

have you seen the brackets that some guy made on here made for saddle bags? If not do a search for soft luggage on the 05 S3, or if any of you other guys remember, post it up for him.

I think the heat shield may work okay for protection from radiant heat but if the bag is laying directly on the pipe you will need some insulation or an air gap also.
