Also, Maybe off topic. Went on a spirited ride tonight with one of my buddies (lots of corners) Hes riding a 04 R1.( he has a hard time keeping up) All was well, kind of. Took a corner pretty close to the berm, felt the rear tire slide out almost lost it with a car coming in the other lane. Held off the brake/throttle and rode it out. Made my hairs stand up. At the next stop, my buddies said my rear tire slide about 8 inches. Took it easy all the way home.

Digressing more; Since purchasing this bike, this was the most spirited ride I've been on, getting close to red line a few times riding out gears. My friend noticed some grey smoke behind me. Just once. is this oil burning/carbon build up burning up? The bike sounds great, no ticking, oil level is good. Should I be worried?

Only mod is a Trident carbon exhaust with the TORs map.

Gray/black smoke is probably just an overly rich mixture (just gas then and not oil), especially if he is seeing it as you jam open the throttle. Bluish-gray smoke would be oil, but again you may see a little under the same circumstance. Keep an eye on oil level and you should be fine. That's not too old for tires either but it may be time for a change. Also, small amounts of gravel on the road or sand, or even small bumps can do that too, nice job holding it steady though.

Nah, but your tires might be losing their grip. If they were mounted 2 years ago they could be a bit older. Check the DOT date on the sidewall. You will see something like this: DOT 1511. The first two numbers are the week of the year the tires were manufactured. The second two numbers are the year. So 15th week of 2011 in the example.

Tires that go on sale are often already well past their build date. If they also sit on the bike a while they will have lost some grip. Maybe you just hit some sand or gravel that fresher tires could have handled better...or not. If yor tires are truly only two years old they would be fine.

New tires, an oil change and brake fluid change are the best thing you can do to a used bike. Good insurance and now you know where you stand. Next time you know it was you.

Did you notice a lot of understeer until you got used to it? I did after switching from a gsxr.
