Er,
alright, picking up the S3 this weekend, and I'm trying to remember, after all these years of switching between brit and japanese bikes. What is the shifting pattern?

Left Shift, 1 Down 5 Up?
or was it
Left Shift, 1 Up 5 Down?

I can't believe I can't remember right now!

Just watched Starsky&Hutch again last night, and the line at the end "Now with this transmission you're gonna wanna jump the clutch and go 2 to 4" seems fitting to have watched the night before this post!

As I recall it is 1 down and the rest up. My 95 is 5 speed. My BMW is 1 down 5 up.

S3 is left shift 1 down, 5 up. The older brit bikes were right side shift, but all modern bikes are on the left. Make sure and treat the S3 with utmost respect. 118 hp makes the throttle very sensitive and its really easy to get in trouble really quickly. That said, its a terrific bike and I'm sure you'll love everything about it.
