kuhlka, you make me feel old.
At least I know who "The Clash" and "The Ramones" are. :hammer:
I'm decidedly old school. I studied Jazz and to a certain extent classical in College. I played trombone for ten years or so, hardly a "Punk" instrument. (Emo? Maybe. Could be considered "metal" I suppose. )
What fascinates me is the Jazz revival in Japan and other places. There's really good stuff being produced there, and even some here in the states. Check out Satoko Fujii or Yoko Kanno.
I see this as steps towards thoughtful music rather than
thump thump rap or screaming punk three chord vocal abuse. And don't get me started on "Indie" music. Blech. Mostly sounds like a 14 year old composing with GarageBand with lyrics written in their creative writing class.
Other than that, I like a little bit of everything. Old style George Clinton and Funkadelic, Dire Straits, some old and/or new blues, John Coltrain, Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan, JJ Johnson or even Benny Goodman and the like.
Lately I've been grooving with
Jake Shimabukuro, a dude who plays ukulele like it is an electric guitar. He plays rifs like Stevie Ray Vaugh and Eddie Van-Halen but on ukulele! Weird and wonderful.
I'm also kind of taken with this strange chick,
Shivaree, although I think her first album was better than subsequent efforts.
And speaking of strange chicks:
Emily Autumn
Finally there is
BOA Which I was turned on to some time ago because the were featured in
Serial Experiments: Lain (Strange and wondeful, if you are in to the anime thing) and then enjoyed in their own right.
Sorry, this just when on and on tonight.
