Any body got any tips on taking the tank of my 05s3.
I've bought a second tank for a winter paint job and notice it has a huge opening on the underside nothing like I've seen on previous bikes....

Any advice would be much appreciated?

That "Huge Opening" you see is for the fuel pump and cover. The fuel pump is attached to this cover, inside the tank. There are only a few things to connect to the tank. The two breather lines (don't put them on backwards!), the fuel pump electrical plug, and the fuel line quick disconnect. The last two items are part of the fuel pump plate that bolts to the bottom of the tank.

It's relatively simple to remove the tank, but I think it's silly that they didn't make it easy just to tip the tank up for access to the air box. It would have been so easy! But no, you have to remove the tank completely.

When removing the tank I found it was a good idea to completely take off the rear body work. It's not that hard, and it makes life a lot easier. Particularly the left side bodywork, because you'll need to get in there to remove and reattach the breather hoses.

The fuel quick disconnect makes taking the tank off almost a joy. Just pull it apart. Afterwards, check to make sure the rubber o-rings are still in good shape, or when you put it back together it may leak.

Powerbike,

I just took my tank off to run some wires for heated grips. The big problem is the two breather tubes. They ate about 1/4" (6 mm?) and there is very little extra length. I'd suggest you gently lift the tank about 3/4" and put a drop of light colored paint on the tube closest to you. If you lift the tank too far the tubes will slip off and I don't see any way to identify which one should be on the outside (ask me how I know this). One would just have to guess.

Next time I ride I plan to take the wrenches and allen keys I'd need to lift the tank and redo the tubes if I got mine on backwards.

I did find it easy to reconnect the drains without taking off the left side panel. I reached below the panel and propped the tank up a little with a piece of rigid foam so I could see the nipples and had no trouble pushing on the tubes.

Both the gas and fuel pump power are easy. Just squeeze and remove. Lots of slack so you can get the tank up high enough to get your hand in to undo the fittings. Piece of cake to take them off and even easier to put them back on.

on pre 05 ones there's an easy way to figure out the lines, don't know if it's the same for new ones though. for the lines on the left side: take the one that goes "nowhere" and hook it up to either nipple. blow in it. if you hear air coming out of the cap at the top you've got the right one.
